How to Fix Photos Showing the Incorrect Date on iPhone?

Have you ever noticed that your iPhone photos display the wrong date? For example, when you take a photo right now, the iPhone may record it with the wrong year. Or perhaps some iCloud-synced photos that were originally taken in 2020 now show a creation date in 2023. When your photo library contains many photos with incorrect dates, it can be frustrating to organize or sort them by timeline.

Don’t worry—this guide will walk you through several ways to fix the incorrect photo dates on your iPhone and restore the original shooting date.

1. Enable “Set Automatically” for Date & Time

The Photos app relies on your iPhone’s current system date and time to record the shooting date of a photo. If your device’s date and time are incorrect, new photos may show the wrong timestamp. To fix this:

Go to iPhone Settings -> General -> Date & Time. Toggle on Set Automatically.

adjust iPhone date and time

This setting ensures your iPhone automatically updates the date and time based on your time zone and location.

2. Check Language & Region Settings

Your iPhone’s Language & Region settings affect how dates and times are displayed, and the selected Region also determines your default time zone.

If you’ve moved to a different country or time zone and haven’t updated your iPhone’s region, your photos may show incorrect timestamps. To update your region:

1. Go to iPhone Settings -> General -> Language & Region.

2. Tap Region and select your current location.

Check Language & Region Settings

3. Manually Adjust the Photo Date in the Photos App

The iPhone Photos app allows you to manually change the date and time of individual photos. To adjust a single photo:

1. Open the Photos app and select a photo. Tap the info (i) button to view details.

2. Tap Adjust next to the creation date. Select the correct date and time, then confirm.

This method is ideal for correcting a few photos. However, it becomes time-consuming if you have many photos to fix.

4. Batch Edit Photo Dates Using Photo Exifer

For large batches of photos, use a third-party tool like Photo Exifer for iOS. It’s a photo metadata editor that lets you update the creation dates of multiple photos at once. Download and install Photo Exifer from the App Store.

1. Open the app, tap Select, and choose the photos you want to modify.

Alternatively, you can:

Select photos, Tap Action -> Set EXIF date as Created date to copy the embedded EXIF shooting date to the photo’s creation date.

With these methods, you can easily fix incorrect photo dates on your iPhone and maintain an accurate photo timeline. If your photo library is important for documentation, travel logs, or memories, having correct dates makes browsing and organizing much easier.
