Some iPhone users reported that their iPhones were unable to send pictures using iMessage after updating to iOS 18, and all iMessage messages were sent as SMS or RCS messages. If you're experiencing this issue or something similar, here are six solutions to help you fix it.
1. Restart Your iPhone
Restarting your iPhone can clear temporary system caches and may resolve issues related to iMessage. Go to Settings -> General -> Shut Down, then slide to power off. To turn your iPhone back on, press and hold the Side button (or Sleep/Wake button) until the Apple logo appears.
2. Check Your Network Connection
Make sure your iPhone is connected to a stable internet connection. Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data if necessary.
Also, confirm that the Messages app has permission to use data: Go to Settings -> Cellular -> Apps Using WLAN & Cellular, then locate the Messages app and ensure WLAN & Cellular Data is selected.
3. Select Your Phone Number in iMessage Settings
Go to Settings ->Apps -> Messages -> Send & Receive, and make sure your phone number is selected under the Send & Receive. iMessage uses wireless data to send messages, so ensure your iPhone number is correctly registered with Apple’s iMessage servers.
4. Check iPhone Storage
Ensure your iPhone has enough available storage to send and receive iMessage attachments. Go to Settings -> General -> iPhone Storage. If storage is low, consider deleting unused apps, games, or large video files.
If System Data is taking up a significant amount of space and can’t be manually deleted, you may want to use a third-party app like iPhone Cleaner to remove system cache files, logs, and temporary downloads.
5. Disable and Re-enable iMessage in iCloud
Since iMessages are synced with iCloud, try disabling and re-enabling iMessage to refresh the connection.
Go to Settings -> tap your Apple ID -> iCloud -> toggle off Messages, wait a few seconds, then toggle it back on.
6. Reset Network Settings
If network-related issues persist, reset your iPhone's network settings: Go to Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. Note: This will erase saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, so you may need to reconnect afterward.
