How to Add Keywords to Photos on iPhone or iPad (Easy Guide)

Adding keywords to photos is one of the most effective ways to organize and manage your photo library. Keywords are metadata tags that help you quickly search, filter, and find specific photos—even after transferring them to other apps or devices.

While the Photos app on iPhone and iPad lets you add captions, it doesn’t allow you to directly add or edit photo keywords. This can be frustrating for users who rely on keywords for photo management.

Fortunately, there are two reliable methods to add keywords to photos on iPhone or iPad: using a third-party app or adding them on Mac with iCloud Photos enabled.

Why Add Keywords to Photos?

Better organization: Tag photos by event, location, people, or project.

Faster search: Use keywords to instantly find groups of photos.

Cross-platform compatibility: Keep metadata intact when transferring photos between devices.

Method 1: Add Keywords with the Photos Exifer App on iPhone

Since the built-in iPhone Photos app doesn’t support keywords, the best solution is to use a third-party app like Photos Exifer. It allows you to add and edit various metadata tags, including:

• Keywords

• Title and description

• File name

• Camera make and model

• Lens make and model

• GPS location (longitude/latitude)

• And more

Steps to Add Keywords on iPhone with Photos Exifer:

1. Download and install Photos Exifer from the App Store. Open the app and grant permission to access your photo library.

2. Select a photo, tap Edit Metadata, then enter or edit the Keywords field. Tap Save Edit to apply changes.

This makes it easy to tag entire groups of photos at once.

Method 2: Add Keywords on Mac and Sync with iCloud Photos

If you use both an iPhone and a Mac with iCloud Photos enabled, you can add keywords in the Photos app on your Mac, and they will automatically sync to your iPhone and iPad.

Steps:

1. Open the Photos app on your Mac. Select a photo and click the Info (ℹ️) button.

2. Enter your desired keywords in the Keyword field, the updated keywords will sync to your iPhone via iCloud Photos.

This is a great option if you already organize your photos on a Mac and want those changes reflected on your iPhone.

Final Thoughts

Although the iPhone Photos app doesn’t natively support keyword tagging, you can still add and manage keywords in two ways:

• Directly on iPhone or iPad using Photos Exifer

• On a Mac with iCloud Photos enabled for automatic syncing

By adding keywords, you’ll make your photo library more searchable, better organized, and easier to manage across all your devices.
